Water-Fire Reversal AU
...But then, everything changed when the Water Tribes attacked.
Here's the proper headcanons/outline/AU thing for my own interpretation of Water-Fire reversal AU.
Based on my post here.
-The Water Tribes becomes the perpetrators of the 100 years war, and the Fire Nation becomes the one stripped away and decimated.
-God forgot to nerf the Southern Water Tribe and they joined forces with the North during Kyoshi's time.
-Kyoshi is too busy chillin on her island to bother with them, so they become dangerously powerful by the time Roku rolls around.
-The Fire Nation still goes through with it's industrialization, because, come on it's a volcanic island chain. There's lots and lots of heat, and fossil fuels, and metal ore. They wouldn't not have an industrial revolution.
-The only difference here is that Sozin actually heeds Roku's advice and decides to listen to the Avatar. He accepts that the world needs to remain four nations, and decides to help him uphold the balance.
-Their friendship grows strong once again.
-So when colonies appear in the Earth Kingdom, it's the South colonizing Kyoshi island.
-Roku is like, OH HELL NO- D:<
-He goes to confront the Southern Chief, and she's all, bitch I do what I want.
-But Roku has had time to calm his tits on the ride over so, he tries to be rational and restrained about it.
-So he be like, "Leave Kyoshi alone, or I will string you up by your nipples"(or something like that. :'D)
-Also, uh, Kyoshi may or may not be part of why Roku is so mad. I mean he is her direct successor.
-The uh, the Water Tribes didn't like that.
-At all, lmao.
-They get into a fight, he kills the chief, which only further serves to turn the Water Tribes against him. And makes their chief a martyr. Strengthening her cause.
-However, at the time they see Roku as acting as Avatar, so they leave the Fire Nation be. Their beef is with him.
-The Avatar is at war with the Water Tribes for several years, resulting is heavy destruction for both tribes, and leaving Roku exhausted.
-Rather than see their Tribes destroyed, they decide to temporarily back off, lick their wounds, recuperate, and make a plan to strike back against Roku.
-Tired, Roku retires to his volcano home and settles down with his family.
-Now, volcanoes do not erupt with no warning whatsoever. Roku and the inhabitants of his island simply misjudged when it would blow it's top.
-However, it did not escape the Water Tribe's notice that the volcano was growing increasingly unstable.
-They primed themselves to strike as it grew increasingly violent.
-When the volcano blew it's top Roku was dealing with both an angry volcano, and angry waterbenders using their combined power to summon tsunamis.
-Roku had to stop the volcano and protect the people trying to flee at the same time.
-He put more into protecting the people, as they had nothing to do with it and didn't deserve to be dragged into his conflict.
-Sozin, seeing Roku's island blowing it's top, came in on his dragon and offered his help.
-Sozin works to get the people to safety while Roku battles the volcano and waterbenders.
-Roku is overwhelmed and both he and his dragon are slain in battle.
-Sozin sees the attack as a declaration of War.
-The Air Nomads are not wiped out.
-Not because the Water Tribes are nice or anything. No, in this AU, they are just as bad as canon Fire Nation.
-The Air Nomads are still around because there is no water equivalent to Sozin's comet. And where the Air Nomads live, ridiculously high above sea-level, protects them from the Water Tribes.
-Sozin begs the Air Nomads for help, but they refuse to partake in the war. Even to the point of hiding Aang from the world.
-In this AU, the Air Nomads serve a role similar to the canon North and Ba Sing Se. Where they put up their defenses and sit idly by as the rest of the world drowns.
-The Water Tribes decimate and wash away many coastal communities, only sparing the ones that bow down to them and allow themselves to be colonized.
-Ba Sing Se and Omashu are safe, because they are far away from major sources of water. Ba Sing Se is mostly surrounded by desert and the only water way is protected by sea serpents(plural).
-And also that goddamn wall.
-Kyoshi Island had the Unagi, but... it was killed. :'D
-The South had a feast that night. lmao
-Sozin plans on putting an end to the war using Sozin's Comet(called Agni's Comet or the Great Comet).
-But uh, there's an eclipse.
-It becomes known as the Darkest Day in Fire Nation history.
-The Fire Nation royal family make it out okay, but to say the country as a whole was decimated is an understatement.
-This becomes the catalyst to the war, with the Earth Kingdom being moved to join forces with the Fire Nation to fight back against the Water Tribes.
-The Earth Kingdoms and Fire Nation have some leverage with their metal ships, but the Water Tribes have the advantage of literally being able to use the battle field as a weapon.
-Learning from the Darkest Day, the Fire Nation(with the help of the Earth Kingdom) builds a wall around it's inner cities.
-They make a recovery, but the outermost communities(ie. the fishing villages) are pillaged and ravaged constantly by the Water Tribes.
-Of course, there was a short occupation of the Fire Nation by the Water Tribes as a result of the Darkest Day, but well, let's just say Agni's Comet fixed that. :^D
-As for Aang, he still goes out and explores the world, but only under the strict guidance of the other monks.
-They are careful to hide the war from him, and him from the war.
-However they cannot hide him from his destiny forever, and as the monks grow increasingly worried over the world's state of affairs, they decide to hide him away completely.
-Very, intimately aware of the fact that Water is next in the cycle, and they likely won't hesitate to kill the poor child to get their own Avatar to corrupt to their terrible ways.
-Aang doesn't take very well to be smothered and runs away.
-Unfortunately he ends up in the middle of a battlefield with fireballs, waves and ice going every which way.
-The stress of nearly being killed triggers the Avatar state and he freezes the battle with himself in stasis in the center.
-The other soldiers either escape or die in the icy tomb. :)
-Without Sozin and Azulon perpetuating a cycle of abuse, Ozai, Zuko, and Azula all turn out as much better people.
-On the other side, the familial bonds of the water tribe take a much darker tone. Anyone not within the tribe/the family doesn't matter. The Tribe is all that matters, all others are the enemy. They become colder, much more insular. While they care for one another, they become rigid as ice, family and tradition being valued above all else.
-Also, waterbending lost touch with it's roots, becoming dark and perverted. A way to sway others to your own way, rather than flowing with the natural push and pull of the world, it became the water tribe pushing against all and pulling in what they please.
-This is borrowing from another AU of mine(*eyebrow dance*), healing is perverted into a technique that brainwashes people. Think of Katara healing Jet's mind from the brainwashing, but in reverse. :^)
-Kanna and Pakku are betrothed, while Pakku is willing to let things like only teaching women to heal, and arranged marriages slide, finds actual, genuine brainwashing to be genuinely disturbing. But tries his best to ignore it. It's just how things are, he tells himself.
-When Hama developed her bloodbending technique and shows it off to the North.
-She proposes it as a way to get the filthy ashmakers and dirtstompers to submit to the mind melting.
-When they try to get Pakku to learn/teach his students bloodbending, he breaks. He can't take it anymore and deserts.
-He becomes the first to desert the Water Tribe navy.
-Kanna feeling the bite of shame, agrees to marry someone from the South instead.
-But also, daytime bloodbender Yue.
-When Katara turns fourteen, she is deemed a master waterbender and given the rights to begin higher level training and learn the secrets of the Water Tribes.
-She learns of bloodbending, and mind manipulation.
-Having fully bought into Water Tribe propaganda her whole life, she cannot believe this. Horrified, she speaks out directly calling Hama disgusting and wicked for inventing such a technique.
-She rightfully calls out her tribes elders for using these techniques on innocent people.
-Oh, boi, but calling out the elders amounts to treason.
-Because she called out her elders, she had dishonored her ancestors and as such had to best Hama in one-on-one combat to avoid being exiled.
-And uhhh, she lost her fuckin eye instead.
-Disillusioned from loosing his father to the war, Sokka joins Katara in her exile.
-Seeing as Kya is the chief of the South, she gives an in for Katara to return back to the tribe's good graces. A way to prove herself. She must find the Avatar and bring him to the Water Tribes.
-Sokka having grown disillusioned, sees it as a way for him and his sister to finally get away from the darkness infesting their home.
-They spend two years at sea looking for the legendary Avatar who vanished for 100 years.
-Also Katara wears an eyepatch and 100% looks like a motherfucking pirate.
-And Zuko, sixteen year old, grumpy but well meaning and kind-hearted Zuko, fears deeply for his people.
-Unfortunately, he feels like his nation isn't doing nearly enough to protect the people living outside the walls.
-Ozai warns young Zuko multiple times that his is not permitted outside the walls. "That place is no place for royalty." He would say.
-"Come back to your gilded cage" He would mean.
-It's only inevitable that Zuko sneaks out and invents the person of the Blue Spirit to help the poor folk living outside the walls.
-His uncle catches him, but doesn't tell. Instead he watches over him, he knows that he can't stop Zuko from trying to save his own people.
-Unfortunately things go tits up when there is an attack in the middle of Zuko helping the people.
-Zuko is captured, and taken away, but Iroh manages to sneak on as well.
-Together they escape, but by that point that are far, far away from the Fire Nation.
-While slowly rowing their little dingy back, they come across a certain frozen battlefield sitting in the middle of the ocean...
-And as fate would have it, a certain, hot-headed, one-eyed waterbender and her "slacker" brother happen to be sailing nearby when Aang is freed.
-Aang has no idea that he's the Avatar, but he also doesn't feel like going back home. He wants to know why the people are fighting.
-He wants to understand why they hate each other so much. :(
-Iroh picks up that Aang is the Avatar right away though.
-He subtly tries to pry Aang about how much he knows of this or his destiny.
-And Aang knows nothing, the monks never got the chance to tell him because he ran away.
-Iroh thinks of a way to gently break the news to Aang, and tactfully handle his need to be trained so he can put an end to this war once and for all.
-Hopefully before Agni's Comet, because Iroh knows that even though his brother isn't a wicked man, he will do what is necessary to put an end to this.
-You see, the Fire Nation has begun to withdraw, it's mostly biding it's time for the Comet's return so that they can put an end to this struggle once and for all.
-Ozai doesn't want to destroy the Water Tribes, but watching his father drown, his nephew slaughtered, and his own brother crippled and forced into retirement has brought him to some very dark conclusions.
-Iroh advocates strongly against using the comet for war, but Ozai has made it clear if the war does not end before the comet appears... He will do what he deems to be necessary.
-That being said, finding out that his son and brother had been taken by the Water Tribes throws him into a rage.
-And yeah, loosing Lu Ten and Azulon, broke Iroh. Along with being physically injured himself. So he gave up the throne to Ozai, feeling that there was nothing he could do for his country.
-With the Avatar, now found, Iroh decides to indulge his nephew's desire to travel and help in the war effort.
-Because, well, Iroh is terrified that Ozai will use Aang to take down the Water Tribe violently.
-An unfortunate consequence of this is that for a while, Ozai thinks that Zuko and Iroh are dead!
-And Ozai is the opposite of able to cope with this. lmao
-I haven't decided when Aang should realize that he's the Avatar, but it's def gonna be due to him loosing control and lashing out in the avatar state.
-Iroh ends up being the one to calm Aang down when he goes Avatar-Rage-Mode.
-Because Iroh is big soft man, and basically Aang and Zuko's dad.
-It's too soft to for me to resist okay?? :D
-I'm also not entirely sure when to place this on the timeline, but I am highly considering having Ozai find out that Zuko and Iroh are alive at the end of Book 1, so that it can mirror canon a bit. Because as soon as he finds out they're alive he sends his stronk ass, prodigy daughter Azula to go fetch the two and bring them back home safely.
-But also go get the Avatar, so he can be properly trained in firebending.
-Yes, Azula is good in this fic. But she's still not nice. She's very pragmatic and stoic. She does genuinely care about her brother and Uncle, but she considers the safety of the world and the Fire Nation to be more important than their feelings.
-She's cold and detached, but would do anything to protect the Fire Nation, her family or help the world as a whole.
-Azula is also occasionally playful, teasing Zuko and calling him Zuzu or dum-dum.
-Once she's pulled into the story, she kinda serves as a rival to Zuko. Constantly trying to drag the Gaang home to the Fire Nation, so the Avatar can be taught by proper instructors.
-And Ozai is not a bad dude, but he's STRESSED. And seen some very unfortunate things. Let's just say, the war is not putting him a great headspace.
-Like he isn't abusive like Canon!Ozai, but his desperation to save his country and put an end to the war is driving him to do some questionable things. Like considering using Agni's Comet.
-The people of the Foggy Swamp are still good and left in tune with the true nature of water. So when time comes around to Katara to have her heel-face turn, ya already know who she gon go to.
-Also, they sups spiritual, so yeh.
-I am also considering having the Foggy Swamp be the final point of Katara's redemption arc, like her final realization of what he destiny really entails and what she must do.
-But I do want the first step to be Sokka getting injured while protecting her.
-Like she can't believe this, she's about to loose the last piece of her family, and in a desperate move, she rediscovers the lost art of true healing. Saving Sokka's life.
-I’m also considering having Katara join the Gaang at the end of book two.

Well didn’t get this done before Chapter Five came out, but I’m still MUCH more caught up than I had been. Good thing they’re going on a six week break here soon since that’ll not only let me catch my barrings... but let my soul have a break, GOOD GOD THESE PAST TWO CHAPTERS HIT HARD!As far this specific chapter goes... boy I did not expect me to shock me as much as it did. So w\let’s not waste anymore time and jump right into it.
Overview
Robyn is recalling a story about Joanna in prison, but neither Jaques or Qrow are all that into. But she does manage to get Qrow to finally smile, as well as notice him still holding Clover’s badge. She apologizes for what happened, which lets Qrow vent about the entire fiasco and how for the first time in so long, it felt like he had made a connection without having to fear his Semblance ruining it. Robyn... actually understands, herself having been ostracized due to her lie detecting Semblance making people fear her revealing their secrets. Harriet and Marrow enter, throwing Watts ack into his cell. Harriet doesn’t believe Qrow declaring his innocence, even when Robyn offers to use her Semblance. Robyn also calls Harriet out on essentially blaming others and not caring about the truth since it’s easier for her to not accept her own blame. Before Harriet can act, Marrow stops her and the speedster storms off/
Back in the tundra, JYR are still giving chase to The Hound, Jaune even launching Ren at it. It doesn’t work and The Hound even calls for backup, summoning more Grimm. It leads to a giant chase sequence, including a new song that IDT has a title yet, but it is dark as Hell. The chase ends with two of the bikes being destroyed, Yang and Jaune almost falling over a cliff until Ren uses his grappling features to save them, and the three are forced to watch as The Hound escapes with Oscar in it’s clutches. Back up in Atlas, RWBNM have gone to, surprisingly, the Schnee Manor to lay low and tend to Nora. Whitley is less than pleased, especially with what Weiss did not even 24 hours ago in-show, but Weiss makes it clear that they’re not leaving and she sends him to his room. As Weiss and May tend to Nora, Blake sees Ruby worried about the others. She suggests that Ruby can still call Yang... but there’s one problem, Ruby already did.
JYR are out of signal range, forcing them to make their way back to Mantle on-foot. During the trek however, Ren’s closed up attitude is flaring up, which eventually causes Yang to get on his case. Ren i9s frustrated due to not just losing Oscar, but everything that has happened. Losing the Relics, Ironwood’s betrayal, the current Grimm attack with Salem just outside the doorstep. Even with yang pointing out their accomplishments and admitting that they have made mistakes but still pulled through, Ren’s anger flares as he points out that they are WAY in over their heads. Jaune tries to calm them both down, but Ren continues to point to how Ruby is leading them despite still being a kid, he himself is an orphan form the middle of nowhere, and the biggest shock is him getting after Jaune for forging his way into Beacon. This shocks everyone, even Ren himself, but Jaune simply says that he’s getting out of the cold and walks on. Yang asks if Ren just wats to push everyone away before following, leaving Ren shocked and upset.
Meanwhile... oh boy, this scene. Oscar wakes up and standing right across from him is Salem. She addresses Ozma and how long it’s been since she’s seen him and... yeah it’s pretty unsettling. Oscar tries to act like Oz, but Salem sees right through it and tries to get Oscar to give her answers. He genuinely doesn’t know where the Beacon Relic is, so Salem tries to get the password to the Lamp out. When he tries to use the ‘out of questions’ ploy... Salem uses her magic to... magically torture him... yeah it’s... rough. Oscar still doesn’t talk, so Salem brings out Hazel... you know, the guy who hayes Oz probably more than anyone and has sworn to kill him? Yeah...
Cinder meets with Salem, taken back by The Hound which Salem calls an experiment. Cinder again tries to convince her to let her go after Penny, but Salem again orders her to stay put. Cinder agrees... well, verbally anyways. But she knows that the heroes are likely going to still try and launch Amity, so sh decides to go for the Maiden Power anyways. Neo is less than thrilled with this plan, but Cinder has another person willing to help her: Emerald.
Back in the tundra, JYR have found shelter for the night and Jaune admits that Ren is correct about how he cheated his way into Beacon. But he’s since realized that he was above his mistake and tries to convince Ren to not push them out, knowing fully well how all that it does is hurt you more. If it did any good, Ren doesn’t show it as he goes to sit outside. Yang has found a part to fix the bike and also assures Jaune that she knows that he worked hard to get to where he is now. She starts working on the part before asking Jaune if ‘she’ thinks any less of her. Jaune, assuming that she means Ruby, assures her that they’re sisters and will be fine... but Yang was talking about a certain cat girl. Our episode ends here... but not before showing us the ice nearby beginning to crack... thanks a lot CRWBY!
Review
Like I said in the intro, I didn’t expect this chapter to shock me like it did. Did I expect intensity? Of course, especially after the last chapter? Did I expect what we got? Nope, but it was perfect!
Let’s talk about Ren first. Ever since last volume, it’s been clear that he’s been unraveling. He wasn’t engaging in Nora’s antics anymore, was more closed up than usual, seemed in agreement with Ironwood at one point, and of course his mini-breakdown in the finale Not even Nora and him kissing helped, heck considering what happened after it only seemed to make him worse. Even now he’s at serious odds with Nora for the first time since childhood, something that is clearly bothering him despite him keeping it to the chest. He’s trying to keep his focus on his duty, but with everything going more and more wrong, the facade is not only shattering, but the cracks are causing him to push those close to him away.
His argument with Yang was a tense moment. I like it though. Not only for more unique character dynamics, but out of every character Yang will lay it out as it is. If Ren’s going to have an attitude problem, then she will call it out and not give a damn about the reason why. Since Nora can’t get though to him, the harsher approach is kind of the only thing left. Ren’s breakdown was hard to watch... and he is right to an extent. They are in over their heads. Their decision, even if the right one morally, is creating more problems and endanger more lives. Ruby is still a kid and she’s placed far too much on herself. I think he is underestimating himself and the others about not being ready, but his concerns are completely understandable and he has some good, if harsh, points.
But then he brings up Jaune cheating his way into beacon. Yeah, been a while since that came up, huh? I actually gasped when that came up. While Ren clearly didn’t mean for that to come out, the fact that he did when pointing out that they’re way over their heads does display at least some doubts he has about his leader. JNR have grown close over the past few volumes, Ren and Nora essentially considering Jaune family by the time of Volume 6. So hearing this was hard, especially since all that Jaune was doing was trying to calm him and Yang down.
I do, however, like how Jaune reacted. Back in the early volumes, he likely would have taken it as a blow to his confidence and gotten huffy about it. Now? While the blow clearly stung, he keeps himself in check and keeps focus on finding shelter. Then once there, he outright admits that Ren’s right and tries to comfort him. He tries to advise him on opening up and how closing yourself off doesn’t help. Considering that he tried this both in V1 when we found out how he cheated and after Pyrrha died and only getting better when he allowed others to help, he absolutely knows how Ren feels. But the fat that he handled this so maturely and tried to help his friend instead of get angsty about it shows how much he’s grown. It’s really nice to see.
Now let’s talk about Weiss and Whitley. So this got some... mixed reception. Some were upset about Weiss pointing her weapon and Whitley and her general harsh behavior towards him this chapter. Now I do understand the first part since I was similarly annoyed at Yang for threatening Qrow in Volume Six when all that he was trying to do was be reasonable about the Lamp. It was likely too harsh, but in farness Weis sis not only trying to help save the kingdom, but one of her teammates is in critical condition and she has no time for Whitley to be angry at her. The Manor is the safest place at the moment, and she needs to get Nora care now. Not saying it’s a justification, but it isn’t her being mean for the sake of it either.
But even so... guys I’m sorry, but do you seriously expect Weiss to suddenly forgive and coddle Whitley this soon? After years of him belittling her and rubbing his success in her face while she was punished, not to mention seeming more concerned about the family reputation than the current conflict? I’m sorry , but it’s not that simple. Yes, Whitley is also a victim who was manipulated and groomed by his father and unlike Weiss, he was never able to get a proper support system or have any family to help like how Weiss had Winter. I do feel bad for him, and I do think that Weiss will take her mother’s words form the last volume and will help Whitley later in the volume. But they’ve both hurt each other. Whitley by treating Weiss badly, and Weiss not giving him support like she was given. They’re both victims AND hurt each other. Some try to paint it as one is problematic and the other is an innocent child, and that’s simply untrue. They’re only going to realize that if and when they talk out their problems with each other out, it’s just a matter of when it’ll be. It takes time to mend these kinds of things, sadly.
Next is the villains scene... ho boy. So I’m gonna wait on Cinder for the next chapter, but her ignoring Salem in favor of power isn’t a shock at all. No, let’s discuss Oscar. Just... this poor, poor kid. He’s trying to be brave, but seeing him get tortured and especially the screaming?! Aaron Dismuke, why do this to me you jerk?! I do admire him for trying it imitate Oz and keep his composure, but it was just so... brutal to watch. Salem doing it so calmly and being perfectly willing to wait for the answers since she can just make Oscar suffer is... well, evil. And don’t think I missed her with the shadow versions of her daughters. Some say that humanizes her, but since she remorsefully tortured a child and sicked an emotionally unstable brute to physically harm him without a care in the world... no. It didn’t excuse Ironwood, and it sure as Hell isn’t excusing Salem. Tis just makes her all the more terrifying.
Okay... last thing is that scene at the end. The Bumblebee implication scene. So... I won’t lie it did annoy me at first. Before anyone says anything, it was NOT because of hating the ship or anything stupid like that. I’m not a huge Bumblebee fan, but anyone who keeps saying there’s nothing there at this point is living in denial. It’s happening people and since at least Volume 6, I think they’ve been doing it pretty well. My issue is mainly just because... we’ve had plenty of Bumblebee content. Volume 7 had them together in pretty much every scene, and I just don’t like having a pair of characters limited like that. I had the same issue with Renora, especially in Volumes 1-3, and with shipping in general. The main reason though is that I want there to be some more focus on Ruby and Yang because I feel like it’s been a long time and that there is a genuine conflict between them that can bring some interesting things for both. I’m not saying they need to be at each other’s throats, but siblings DO argue and no, it doesn’t always get easily resolved and I am speaking form experience here. To be fair it could happen later and Ruby herself hasn’t been pondering on it that much either. Heck Blake seemed more concerned about it than either of them have. But I would like to see more than just the one pair that I’ve already seen focused on plenty of times because it’s limiting. That’s just a personal thing though and I’ve always enjoyed sibling stuff more than romance, so yeah just a me thing.
That being said, those saying that Yang doesn’t care about Ruby need to calm down. No, that is NO the case. Did we forget Yang trying to console a broke Ruby despite her own grief just last volume? Mere hours ago in-show at that? Despite what I said above and while she’s clearly concerned after Ruby’s recent choices, Yang still loves and ultimately trusts her sister. She never said that she didn’t think that Ruby would fail or was wasting her time, she just felt like Mantle needed them more and the consequences to trying were too much. Heck this is a spoiler, but considering her reaction in the next chapter, it only reinforces that belief. At least with Blake, this is the first time they’ve willingly split apart and Yang clearly still has some abandonment issues and concerns. Plus... yeah, it’s natural when you have feelings for someone to worry if they made a bad choice that may make them doubt them. Blake won’t, but it’s understandable. Heck, Blake was clearly concerned about Yang when trying to get Ruby to call. I think she was trying to comfort Ruby as well with the suggestion, but it was still pretty evident... also Ruby and Blake interaction, yay! Still yeah guys, let’s just... chill a little bit and see what more comes of anything.
Okay, got that out of my system, and I apologize if it came across wrong. Whatever annoyance I had I’m over anyways, especially after the recent chapter. Anyways, the chapter had so much good. Plus we not only had a badass chase sequence, but a new song! Again, IDK the title, but it was another banger for sure. The opening scene with row and Robyn bonding and Robyn calling out Harriet was great. Marrow’s subtle expressions showing how not okay he is, and I’m seriously hoping that he may be the one to free the others. It would be a really good move for his character in him deciding that being lawful doesn’t equal the right thing, and making it right especially considering his interaction with Robyn last volume. The animation was good with the backgrounds looking fantastic, the pacing has been on fire, and of course that ominous ending. God they’re trying to keep us on edge, and I love it!
Chapter Stats
Favorite Character: Lie Ren Favorite Scene: Ren losing it in the tundra Least Favorite Scene: Probably the wrong term, but seeing Oscar be tortured while well done was hard. Favorite Voice Actor: Neath Oum (Ren Favorite Animation: JYR chasing The Hound Rating: 9.9/10
Final Thoughts
This was fantastic, especially in the character department. I haven’t been this shocked in a good while. It hurt no doubt, but the writing and voice performances were so well done. Seriously, this is probably Neath’s best performance to date. Add in the great animation, the tone being on point, and the set-ups with the Schnee Manor and cracking ice and the fact that this is only Chapter Four is crazy. But it’s only going to get crazier people... oh so, so much crazier. Only one review to go until I’m back to being caught up... my poor heart XD

Magic ask for magical characters
God, it’s good that I am subscribed to such great writers who are trying in every possible way to help develop other characters associated with their favorite fandom, live happily <3 Egm, thank you XD
Bad English warning ~w~ I’m really sorry
The questions were constructed by @arcanecadenza, thank you very much again and sorry >w<
1.Magic always comes at a cost… what price does your character have to pay in order to practice it? What kind of trade-offs are involved?
I want to talk about Eleanor, earlier I mentioned that her mother (Akane) came from the Haiko clan, in fact, they were not just cursed magicians who also owned dark magic (of course). The clan leaders concluded in their bodies the energy of that nine-tailed fox-demon which had been killed by their ancestors. And it would seem that this is not a curse at all. But many of them died because their body would simply explode, they could not withstand so much energy, some did not die such a painful death, they turned into monsters, but in their case, it would be better to die at the hands of Haiko magicians.
Haiko Fuji, one of the clan’s leaders, acted quite cunningly, passing with his blood his curse to another group of people (Some of them were Madara and Tsunobi), so his daughter Haiko Akane got only part of the energy of the nine-tailed.
To use the power of the demon inside you, you must donate your blood. The demon is held at the expense of being marked in the form of red symbols, it is on them that the Haiko magicians make a deep cut, thus giving their blood. After that, many painful transformations take place with their body.
Elinor currently does not use her inherited power, which is called a curse, because she does not even remember about it, nor about her past, which is probably to some extent good for her.Not to say that the marks and symbols on her body do not cause her questions. Of course, Eleanor was very scared to find them on her body after amnesia, but any attempts to connect them with her past and remember ended in loss of consciousness, so she tries to cover them up and not especially go in touch with them.
About the magic associated with the elements. The best, but at the same time the most dangerous source of this power is fire. Wizards specializing in fire magic often gain great strength, but pay for it by dependence on the elements of fire, burns, and sometimes even die in flames, for example.Anyway, magic consumes a lot of energy, which is very difficult to recover, it is also likely to pay for the use of magic. It is also worth mentioning that Elinor, after applying any serious spells, suffers very much later, fainting or migraines
2.“For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” What kind of magic directly opposes that of your character? As in, what kind of magic would complement theirs so perfectly that it would be difficult for either one of them to get the upper hand on the other?
That will sound a little funny. But for example, the complete opposite of the demonic magic of Elinor is white magic. But since it uses just white magic, its opposite is demonic, it can also be clarified that if she possessed demonic magic, she could never use it with the magic of elements.
3.What kind of magic would effectively neutralize that of your character?
Magic associated with the penetration of consciousness and its control, so Eleanor can not resist.
4.Is their magic more suited to offence or defence? Or is it more versatile? What is it like when used in a fight?
The magic that Elinor uses now is more suitable for defense than for offence, which cannot be said about its demonic side.
Spells that are/were more commonly used in fight.
Fire(more for offence)
🔥Fire ball. A spell in which fire erupts from the mouth in the form of a massive ball of roaring flame. Also associated with this spell, the creation of a small fiery sphere in the hands
🔥Fire trap. With this spell, the enemy is in a circle of flame, which over time begins to narrow.
Water (more for defence)
🌊 Streaming the water:The spell draws water from a source. In this case, the magician can manipulate it, for example, create large waves, barriers, shapes, whirlpools and so on.
🌳Earth (more for defence)
Eleanor uses only one spell, by. which creates strong currents of wind, most likely it will be able to repel the enemy or prevent him from approaching
.🍃Wind (more for defence)
Eleanor uses only one spell, which creates strong currents of wind, most likely it will be able to repel the enemy or prevent him from approaching.
Dark Magic spells
Puppeteer(more for offence)
With this spell, contact with the enemy is necessary, for example, you must touch him, after which Elinor forms the threads connecting her hands with the body of the enemy, and gives her full control over his body, making the enemy his puppet.
Devil eyes (more for offence)
With this spell, under a step one big circle is formed, inside of which there are smaller circles, each circle is crossed out by a small line, once at the intersection points, raised bayonets rarely grow. The circles begin to spin, new points of intersection begin to appear, and hence new bayonets.
5.What are some interesting subsets and/or sub-practices of their magic? Like, what’s something they can or something that other practitioners of the same kind of magic can do that would surprise someone else?
In addition to the magic associated with the elements and demons, Eleanor is very fond of doing all sorts of wonderful tricks. The most elementary, for example, she can make a dancers from an ordinary napkin and arrange a whole ball of napkins ladies and gentlemen at some feast, which will be very effective and beautiful.
6.If they have a magical gateway, does their magic shape it? For example, the pool of water in Asra’s oasis and the fact that he travels to it is by way of bodies of water is likely representative of his affinity for water magic.
There are special mirrors that are a portal to Augusay (the kingdom where Elinor herself was born). These mirrors are in the house of the late aunt Elinor, but she still does not know about their existence.
7.Does magic run in their family? Alternatively, if they are an Apprentice, how does their magic compare to that of their aunt?
Aunt was a rather advanced sorceress; her magic was completely based on the elements of the elements, especially the element of fire was developed.Unlike her brother, Victor (Elinor's father), she owned magic. I also mentioned several times that Elinor inherited magical abilities from her mother Akane too.
8.How sustainable is their magic? Where do they fall on a sliding scale of getting tired after one spell versus feeling more and more energized the more they cast?
If you do not talk about the dark magic of Elinor, then it is quite stable. However, depending on the spell. If this spell (for example) is associated with the creation of large spheres of fire, then the larger the sphere, the greater the likelihood that Elinor will lose consciousness. If for example the mass of water that Elinor controls is very large, then she will not be able to hold out for too long. What about dark magic, the longer Elinor casts spells, such as the devil's eye or a puppeteer, there will be a chance that she will lose control over herself, otherwise her body will transform into a nine-tailed Demon, more precisely, a seal on her body will be destroyed.
9.Where does your character’s magical potential come from? Is it inherent? Is it because of some sort of bargain that they struck with an entity/Major or Minor Arcana? Is it a skill that was taught and honed? Is it a combination of things?
I wrote earlier, so the answer will be short. The magic of Elinor was inherited from her mother as well as the curse of the nine-tailed, about the Haiku clan I already described in questions regarding apprentice 10.If you had to assign an elemental denotation to their magic, what would it be and why? Fire, earth, air, or water?
Fire. Her entire clan had a predisposition to fire (Uchiha lol)
11.What is their relationship with magic like? Is it something they feel blessed to have or is it more of a burden/curse to them?
Eleanor does not know about her demonic power, so her abilities would be a terrible curse for her. So she believes that this is a great gift that can make the world a better place, so she is trying her best to develop her magical demand.
12.In what ways could they potentially misuse their magic? If you’re not sure of what I mean, just think of how a skilled waterbender could just as easily bloodbend to accomplish their goals/get what they want.
Many options, especially if you take dark magic, the puppeteer’s spell is very suitable for achieving any goals, because with it you gain control over someone else’s body.
13.What school(s) of magic best encompasses that of your character? Abjuration, conjuration, divination, enchantment, evocation, illusion, necromancy, or transmutation? Yes, this is a Dungeons and Dragons question because I’m a nerd and I’m very curious.
Oh... I think.. Oh.. conjuration probably. 14.What kind of ethics are associated with your character’s practice of their magic? What kind of in-universe laws do you think might exist that pertain to it?
In my opinion, the most important laws regarding magic are the prohibitions on using any ancient forbidden spells, agreements with creatures from other worlds, and the prohibition on using magic outside Hogwarts (just kidding), that is, I mean the prohibition on using magic for the purpose of killing innocent people (yes my fantasy is as sucks as my English, sorry)
15.If your character was tasked with teaching someone else about their magic, where would they start? What would the learning curve look like for that?
It is difficult to imagine Elinor as a master of (hehe) magic. To begin with, she would test her apprentice to make sure that he / she would not abuse his magic and spells, whether he / she would use magic for good. After that, it will be necessary to explain all the dangerous moments associated with magic, its advantages, the minuses of the story and the consequences of its correct and incorrect use and much, much more.

Before I do anything else, I want to post the second part of my two part fic series. This time, from Hawkeye’s eyes on an all male team. There is more dialogue from the game since there is more in game interaction in this configuration, but it still shows his feelings about things going on. Along with some snark from Duran and a bit of adorable from Kevin...
---
The tactical meeting dismissed, leaving Duran and his team to get ready for their trip back to Beiser. There was worry that they might not be able to leave Palo, but thankfully Liza was able to inform them that ships were still going out. Kevin had asked if they could swim instead of taking the boat but was overruled because neither Hawkeye nor Duran would be able to keep up!
“Well, we should get supplies before we leave,” suggested Duran.
Alma, the middle-aged woman who’d been at the meeting, stated, “Then come with me. I’ll show you were we have some extra restoratives. And don’t worry about paying us back…you are taking on this mission for our sake, after all…”
“If we’re getting supplies, can I have something to eat?” questioned Kevin. “I’m hungry.”
The two youths followed her out of the room, as did the few Amazons and the old man. Leaving only Hawkeye and Riesz standing around. He took her in for a moment, not knowing what to think. What other royal princess would volunteer to go on a dangerous mission instead of delegating responsibility to one of her underlings? Not only that, but she was the Captain of the guard as well! Something told him that it wasn’t just some ceremonial position they’d handed off to her…this girl had the look of someone who, despite her unassuming appearance, could kill a man with ease if needed!
“Are you okay?” she asked, looking up.
For a moment, Hawkeye stayed silent. Then he closed the distance between them a little, looking her straight in the eyes. “I am sorry for all you are going through. If I had been stronger, I might have been able to stop this before it got out of hand.”
“Huh?” the confused girl replied. “Whatever do you mean by that?”
Taking a breath, Hawkeye told her, “I…come from Nevarl myself. Ever since that witch, Isabella, joined us, she has been manipulating our leader for her own ends. I tried to stop her, alongside my best friend…but we failed! And I’m the only one of us who survived to keep fighting.”
Riesz was taken back a little. Sure, she had suspected the man to be one of the thieves when he’d been brought in. But while it would have been safer to lock him up in the jail, just in case, something told her that he was trustworthy. Maybe it was the fact that he was traveling with people who were clearly not Nevarlans. Maybe it was the stories Alma had told her about the Pedda war, including mention of a Nevarlan deserter who had been one of her allies, telling her to give him a chance. And yet, she was not expecting him to apologize, or to hear of outside influence starting the conflict.
“I cannot forgive them for killing my father and abducting my brother,” she finally said. “But I can tell you are sincere. Please, do be careful on your journey…I do not want to see others hurt because they are trying to help me and my people.”
Hawkeye thanked her, his mind trying to process everything. This girl…she wasn’t like any royalty he’d ever heard of. All the stories told in Nevarl were of people who would use anyone they could with little care for their safety or security. Of people who would bleed their citizens dry in order to have money for the sake of having money. Yet despite only having just met her, Riesz truly felt like a person who cared for her people out of authentic responsibility, not merely something they claimed in order to get away with whatever they wanted.
As he began to open his mouth, Duran came running in. “Hawkeye! We got the stuff we needed, and Kevin’s fully fed! Let’s head out for Beiser!”
The young thief turned with a sigh, telling Riesz, “Don’t worry, Princess! We’ll get you that info and reclaim your citadel before long!”
“You know, you should call a princess ‘Your Highness,’ if you want to be polite!” Duran stated.
“And you’re one to talk about politeness!” joked Hawkeye. “Besides King Richard, I don’t think I’ve ever heard you act polite towards anyone!”
Their playful argument continued as the pair left the room. Riesz watched them leave, a smile crossing her face. She then grasped her hands in prayer, begging the Goddess of Mana to watch over the three travelers on their journey. Not just for retaking Laurent…but wherever they roamed afterwards.
* * *
A trio of ninja guarded the doorway to the highest point of Citadel Laurent. Before they even knew what was going on, the one in front felt a shuriken embed itself into his forehead! Down to the ground he went, his comrades following soon after to the strike of a sword and the claws of a fully transformed beastman!
“And that’s a wrap for these idiots!” Duran exclaimed, sheathing his sword.
Hawkeye added, “We’re getting close! Isabella’s reign of terror over these people is almost over.”
Duran nodded. “Yeah. And we’ll definitely make sure to get her out of Nevarl once we’ve got the Mana Sword. She may not be my true enemy, but I’m not gonna leave a friend’s home in danger!”
Kevin rammed into the door in front of them, bursting it open. Thankfully…nothing was broken, though Hawkeye did get a lie ready about it being damaged in a fight with the invaders if needed be. He might believe Isabella’s actions were wrong and self-serving, but that didn’t mean that he should have to pay for damages to the citadel done by him and his friends!
As Duran reached out to touch the Goddess Statue, a woman’s pained cry lit up the air! Hawkeye immediately rushed up the stairs to find Riesz, kneeling on the ground and with several bloody gashes on her body. Bil and Ben stood over her, shuriken in their hands and ready to end it…
“Riesz!” he called out, knives at the ready. “Wait, Bil, Ben? Stop! What are you doing!?”
The two paid him no heed, as if they did not recognize Hawkeye at all! Instead, they ran further in, calling out for someone named “Belladonna.” While Hawkeye didn’t know who that was, he had more important things to worry about. Like making sure the injured woman in front of him didn’t bleed out. He grabbed one of the Honey Elixirs that Alma had previously given them and had her drink.
“…Th-thank you… The enemy commandant is in that room over there. I will…go…shortly,” she told him, struggling in an attempt at standing.
Despite the pain clearly still shooting through her body, Riesz tried to pull herself up. Only to collapse back on her knees. Hawkeye could see the determination in her eyes, knowing that he’d probably act the same way under such circumstances. Still, despite his usual reservations about royalty, he was not the type to let a young woman be put in needless danger.
“Don’t be an idiot!” he snapped. “You aren’t going anywhere with those wounds! What would your subjects do if you didn’t make it back? Wait here—we’ll take care of it, Your Highness.”
He ignored Duran’s comment about how he was being all formal towards Riesz now. As well as the wolf whistle and comments about him being a player. Instead, he kept his attention on the beautiful woman before him, her eyes still filled with equal parts determination and pain. She spoke of her promise to avenge her father, something Hawkeye could understand all too well. He would go through anything to avenge Eagle, and if he’d been in the same situation, someone else would have had to get him to stand down. Meaning…he had to do that for her!
Hawkeye looked Riesz straight in the eyes, a gentle expression on his face. “I’ve never been a fan of royalty, but I understand responsibility. You can’t let down all those people who look up to you.”
As he turned to leave, Riesz whispered his name in a gentle voice. Hawkeye could feel strength welling up inside of him. He would do this…for Eagle, for Jessica, for Nevarl. And so the girl in front of him could regain her home! Sternly telling her to stay out of harm’s way, he rushed off!
* * *
They were able to liberate Laurent and get the Nevarlan agents out of the citadel. Still, Isabella, no, Belladonna had gotten away. Hawkeye didn’t know why she’d gone under an assumed name, nor had he ever heard of the “Dark Majesty” that she spoke of. But he could tell that this man was bad news! It looked like he had a tougher fight to reclaim Nevarl and avenge Eagle than he’d expected.
Riesz thanked the group for their help in saving her home. But noted that it would not bring her murdered father back. Hawkeye told her how his friends appeared to be under mind control—something he knew well that Belladonna was capable of, considering what she did to Eagle—and it was the same for all of Nevarl.
“Belladonna… She is the one who stole my father and my kingdom from me,” commented Riesz. “She still has my brother! I will never forgive her!”
Hawkeye looked at her sadly, worried she would get in over her head again. Or worse…she’d skewer Belladonna with her spear before he could finish his own job! “Riesz, listen. I know you want revenge, but if you destroy Belladonna now, an innocent girl’s life will be in danger. Just give me a bit more time. With the Sword of Mana, I know I can save Jessica! That’s why we have to find it!”
Whether out of guilt or worry, he knew not, Riesz looked at the floor. “This Jessica, is she…” But she stopped at those words. “Never mind. I understand the situation. Right now, my fellow countrymen and I need to focus on rebuilding my kingdom.”
He thanked her for understanding and letting him take care of things. Not paying any attention to the smirk Duran was throwing at Kevin. Of course, when the knight mouthed, “I think she likes him!” to his friend, it was missed because Kevin didn’t realize he was trying to send a message!
* * *
With the blessings of her soldiers, all knowing their captain wouldn’t sit and wait for others to rescue her brother, Riesz prepared to set out at the same time as Duran’s team. Hawkeye did wish she would rest a little more, although he didn’t voice his concerns this time. She did appear fully healed, after all, and he knew that if it were him, he’d have to be chained down to keep from going!
‘Funny…never thought I’d say I had something in common with a princess!’ he mused.
“I will set out again to renew my search for my brother,” she informed them. “Thank you all for everything you have done. May we meet again.”
“Riesz, I wish…,” began Hawkeye.
However, Riesz interrupted him as she put her hands up over her reddening face. “Uh, I-I must go now! Take care, everyone. Farewell.”
With that, she ran off, leaving the trio standing in the citadel entryway. Hawkeye looked down for a moment, letting out a sigh. He had wanted to echo her sentiment about seeing each other once more. It would be a shame never to gaze upon such beauty again! Or maybe…
“Hey, Hawkeye?” Kevin asked. “Why did Riesz’s face look red? Is she still hurt?”
Before he could answer, Duran let out a little laugh, putting his arm atop Hawkeye’s shoulder. “It’s simple! She’s obviously got a crush on him! What luck, having a cute princess want you!”
The thief playfully pushed his friend away. “Yeah, right! I think I just knocked her off kilter! She wasn’t expecting me to be so dashing. It’s not like a princess would fall head over heels for someone from the nation that just torched hers!”
“But you wouldn’t mind if she did?” questioned Duran.
Hawkeye had no answer to that one…other than that it would be nice. And expected to get teased mercilessly about it on the boat ride back to Beiser!

An extremely elaborate and specific LotR AU fanfic I’ve had in my head for years but will never write or request b/c it’s a trope I’m extremely finicky about:
A Sauron-less AU where Saruman has become the secret villain off his own bat, playing kingmaker and destroyer among the kingdoms of men for his own amusement, and seeking to remake the long-thought-destroyed orcs and goblins to use as hidden pawns to set men and elves and dwarves against each other.
Which plot starts on the road to discovery when he starts sending Uruk-Hai secretly into the relatively undefended Shire to kidnap hobbits to convert into goblins or other creatures, and for use as slaves.
Specifically, they take Merry and Pippin. Because guess which part of the Two Towers was my favourite plotline as a kid.
So an injured Merry and Pippin are taken captive and brought to Orthanc as slaves, where they meet Saruman and Wormtongue, who is still fulfilling his canon role as Saruman’s mole in Rohan. Merry, who was injured in their capture, is fading badly by this stage, so Pippin tries to manipulate Wormtongue into taking him and Saruman into letting him, figuring that Merry has to have a better chance in Rohan than he does among Uruk-Hai. He largely succeeds, though not without some cost, and Wormtongue takes an only-semi-aware Merry back to Edoras as his personal ‘man servant’.
Pippin, meanwhile, is kept prisoner a little longer, until a delegation from Minas Tirith arrives in Isengard at Saruman’s request. A delegation led by Steward Denethor’s eldest son, whom Saruman seeks to briefly placate with a little gift ...
Meanwhile to all of this, Saruman’s orcs have been attacking strategic settlements and parties to drive up tensions between the races, most particularly between Gondor and everyone else. The attacks on all their homelands and rising tensions cause a gathering in Rivendell among the Northern peoples. And one particular hobbit and his gardener, inspired by his uncle’s tales of the fairness and justice of the elves, make their way across Eriador to attend the summit and bring the big races’ attention to his kidnapped kinsfolk.
Most basically, I wanted slave!Pippin in Gondor and slave!Merry in Rohan, doing their best to survive, bring Saruman to the attention of the powers around them, and at some point reunite with each other. Merry develops a fast and wary friendship with Eowyn, two people alone and under threat in the madness King Theoden’s court has become. Pippin makes tentative inroads with Boromir, who is horrified at the nature of Saruman’s ‘gift’ but too loyal to his father and his kingdom to overtly reject it, but it’s Faramir and Beregond who truly forge bonds with him in Minas Tirith, while Boromir is sent out to ready for war with the North on his father’s behalf. As the Northern forces descend unwillingly southwards and the threat of war rises, it’s up to two small and extremely battered hobbits to derail a dark wizard’s plans.
Things I also wanted somewhere along the road with this idea:
Merry developing a really weird hate/sympathy towards Wormtongue after the man essentially saves his life/prevents him from dying in Isengard, and doing his best to both defeat his goals but also find a degree of mercy for him later, even though Grima’s treatment of Eowyn rapidly erodes much of his sympathy
Gandalf, spurred by Frodo and Sam into suspicion, starting to investigate the kingdoms of men specifically, searching for the source of the hostility, and it’s Merry’s captivity and Theoden’s possession that clues him into Saruman’s treachery in this universe
Boromir sensing the stink of corruption from Saruman, but Denethor is too far gone to the wizard’s (magically-strengthened) manipulations for him to do anything about it, and Boromir cannot let Gondor fall to her enemies, no matter how justified he increasingly fears they might be
Faramir having so much less stomach for Saruman and his father’s actions than his brother, not least because he is so much closer and bears more witness to Denethor’s contempt and ill-treatment of Pippin, and feels torn in two between morality and this evidence of his own ‘disloyalty’ to his family
Faramir eventually breaking and trying to help Pippin escape, but by mischance or manipulation they happen to land right in the middle of one of Saruman’s escalating orc attacks in the attempt. They’re both captured, and Saruman leverages the incident to portray Pippin as having led Faramir into an ‘elvish’ trap, seeking to use it to incite outright war between north and south
Actual elves (possibly Haldir leading a Lothlorien band south to seek the truth) rescuing-slash-capturing them, but not before Pippin has gotten himself slightly chewed upon trying to protect Faramir in apology for the attempt to free him having gotten the man captured, and Faramir is completely frantic for them to save him.
(Rescued, because they’re elves and good and fair and not inclined to eat people, Captured because Gondor is technically well on the way to being at war with everybody and Faramir is Denethor’s second son)
They’re brought north to the elven/dwarven/dunedain/rohirrim war camp gathering in the recently-liberated Rohan
Merry and Pippin reunite, extremely emotionally, and reconnect with Frodo and Sam as well
By which I mean, Pippin spots Merry and practically falls out of Haldir’s arms onto badly-chewed legs to try and get to him, while Faramir shouts hoarsely for Haldir to let him go. Which, incidentally, causes several people to look quite favourably on him
Boromir leads his father’s armies north towards the border as well, hearing reports that his captured brother truly is a prisoner among an elven army, and believing reluctantly and guiltily that Pippin truly has let Faramir be captured in vengeance for his slavery in Gondor
Pippin adamantly defending at the least Faramir and Boromir to the Council forces, and the ordinary Gondorian people as well, because he has friends among them and they’re good people, and Saruman is manipulating people left right and centre, and you cannot go to war with innocent people because of one asshole
The Council (and Faramir) being a bit amazed at his vehemence, given the evidence (and Faramir’s guilty admittance) of how badly he was treated
Gandalf knowing that it’s because once a hobbit decides he likes you, there is no force in Middle Earth that can persuade said hobbit otherwise, though there needs to be cause in the first place to earn their loyalty
Pippin panicking at the thought of war and cooking up a half-baked scheme to run back south and try and head Boromir off, explain the truth to him somehow. Merry joins him, because they’re not being parted again, and Merry knows all about going off half-cocked to protect your humans by now. Frodo and Sam follow because sod it. It is the worst ‘escape’ attempt in the history of hobbitdom, not least because Pippin himself can still barely walk, and in the end it’s Eowyn who scoops them up and masterminds an actual exit for them all
Eowyn is coming, because a) it’s the absolute least she feels she owes Merry, b) hobbits are extremely prone to getting themselves almost killed in her experience, c) she’s been warming up to what she’s seen of Faramir in his captivity/guesthood and doesn’t want him hurt, and d) if Boromir so much as looks funny at those she’s pledged her personal loyalty to she’s going rearrange his spleen for him
Gandalf knows full well what they’re doing but lets them go, because there’s no one better for stopping wars than hobbits, given motivation
Elrond possibly also knows what they’re doing, but is willing to let them try
Faramir is absolutely horrified and terrified that Boromir is going to feel he has to kill or harm them, and that after everything Pippin’s death is still going to be his fault
Theoden and Eomer are also horrified, and if your brother harms a hair on Eowyn’s head, my son, you are going to be in deep shit. But, also, not your fault. Hobbits do this. Trust us, we’d know better than almost anyone
The hobbits and Eowyn are … not exactly captured by the Gondorian army after basically planting themselves stubbornly in their path, but they’re brought to Boromir under guard and not exactly friendly circumstances
Boromir has no idea how to feel about Pippin, angry or betrayed or frantic or guilty, and it’s so much worse seeing him among his own people, with Merry in particular, who Boromir knows Pippin spent all his time with them hoping wasn’t dead. But Pippin led to the capture and possible death of Boromir’s brother, and even if it’s their own fault, Boromir cannot forgive him that
It goes badly, it goes so badly, with shouting and violence and threats from all corners, until Pippin in a fit of tearful frustration rips one of his trouser legs off to show Boromir his wounds. Neither elves nor men leave teeth-marks when they hurt people. The orcs did this. Saruman did this. Boromir knows this. He’s always known it. Yes, Faramir is a prisoner of the northern forces, but they’re not the real enemy, doesn’t he know that, can’t he see it? You can’t let this happen, Boromir. You can’t.
And Boromir does know it. He knew it from the moment Saruman offered him a slave as a welcoming gift, and the moment his father not only allowed it but welcomed it. He’s known from the beginning that there was something rotten in the state of Denmark, but it was his kingdom, his father, what would they have him do? To treat with them would be treason, even to save his brother’s life. Beregond, back in Minas Tirith, is already imprisoned for what was believed to be his role in letting Pippin take Faramir. He is sentenced to death upon Boromir’s return
This nearly kills Pippin to hear. It nearly snaps him in two
Eowyn saves them. Again. She knows, she does know how Boromir feels. She knows what it is to have a father/father figure lost to Saruman’s control. She knows what it is to betray them to save them. But they cannot let this go on. To fight on Denethor’s behalf would only be to betray him in truth, and leave him, and his people behind him, enslaved to the wizard’s will. From what she has seen of his brother and him, surely they have more courage and honour than that?
And, in the end, no more than his brother, Boromir cannot ignore his conscience long. Not even for family. Not even for the father he loves.
Boromir agrees to travel with the group and a small honour guard north to meet with the Council forces, leaving his armies waiting under trusted commanders between Minas Tirith and any northern forces should he be betrayed and not return
They meet near the Falls of Rauros, because of course they do, where else would I have them meet?
Boromir reunites with his brother and, though hardened and guilty and suspicious of all around them, they meet in earnest with the Council to discuss evidence of Saruman’s treachery and the appropriate responses thereto
The bulk of the arrayed northern armies will turn towards Isengard, to destroy Saruman and his orcs once and for all
Theoden and Rohan will stand the bulwark between all forces, maintaining the peace until the threat is removed one way or the other. They have suffered under Saruman’s thrall. Of all nations represented, they will not bend to his manipulations again
Gandalf initially meant to go to Isengard as well, to guard their forces against Saruman’s magic, and to make Saruman answer for what he has done. However, another mission comes up concurrently which he believes requires him more, so he leaves Saruman to the justice of Elrond and Galadriel, in order to shepherd …
… four certain hobbits, two heirs to Gondor, one heir to Rohan, and perhaps a certain Hunters Three to Minas Tirith, because Beregond is sentenced to death, and Pippin will actually die before he lets that happen, and Merry and Faramir in particular will die before they let that happen, and everyone else is perforce along for the ride
And maybe, if they can, they might save Denethor from Saruman’s influence along the way
Also, possibly reveal and crown a new/old king along the way (hi Strider!), to draw Gondor forward from the pall of treachery and manipulation it has fallen to. Though for his own part, Aragorn sees little wrong with the heirs Gondor already has
… Yeah. I’ve not had this stewing in my brain for a literal decade, not at all. Can you tell which canon storylines bashed their way all the way inside my heart, way back when? Heh. It’s too big and unwieldy inside my head to ever be written at this stage, and I’m very, very particular when it comes to slavery in fics, but … I do sometimes wish I had the stamina for it. I really, really do.
(Who am I kidding, I never had the stamina for this, but a girl can dream)

Characters: Hades!Yoongi & Persephone!You
Setting: greek mythology au
Genre: angsty
Warnings: implied sexual content (+ one line about animal sacrifices)
Summary: “I wanted darkness… I wanted him.” sequel to bed warm, hearts cold
Words: 2k
I couldn’t resist because I live for the angst. Also I’m blown away by the love bwhc got. I hope the sequel doesn’t disappoint. Happy birthday to our lovely genius, Min Yoongi! ♥
To this very day, you still remember the pain when you were ripped out of Yoongi’s loving arms. You remember your father’s rage, you remember it all too well. You still ache, heart bleeding black love as you stare out of the marble window. The Sun, shining blindingly bright and delightful, hurts your half-lidded eyes so you look away because there are no blinds or curtains that can shield you now, no salvation from this torture, a prison you know too well. You miss the vast darkness of calamity dearly, the calmness and the silence. You miss the way the stone floor felt cold under your bare feet, the silk of the sheets and you miss, oh you long for the heart made of anger and solitude that only beats for you.
"Shush, my child, it's for your own good," Demeter tells you in a light voice, fake smile blemishing his motherly features. She comes every morning to see you in a suite of a diamond palace you can't escape. Brushing your hair, she tells you stories of misguided innocent souls. Then she braids your soft locks and tucks flowers behind your ear. She doesn't care that it hurts, that your heart is breaking into smaller and smaller pieces with every inhale you take outside of the kingdom of death.
It is supposed to hurt. They claim it happens like this, that it’s a sign that you are healing, transforming back into the obedient daughter you were meant to be in the first place. They keep telling you the distance is the cure to get rid of your false thoughts. They believe that the God of Underneath brainwashed and manipulated you but they are wrong, so wrong. They knew nothing about you. Yet they call you Kore fondly like you were a child and you loathe its implications, the pet name of a maiden. So every night, before sleep claims you and sprinkles bittersweet dreams over your eyelids, you close your eyes and remember.
You remember the softness of his touches on your delicate skin that treated you like glass and porcelain. The hands that gripped you firmly like you were his, the sharp white teeth that marked you, the kisses that left bloodstains behind and you never loved anything more than being under his control and knowing that you had the same disarming effect on him. The glint in his eyes was pride as you sat on your throne beside him. It was made of dried roses, tendrils curling around the metal and it smelled like nothing on Earth. Just like Yoongi who was made of blood and bones and something dark that you loved deeply, madly. No matter how many sunsets passed he was engraved in your skin and that immortal, still-beating heart you had.
No matter how much your parents tried, how much they threatened or begged, they couldn’t erase the other god’s touch off you. Never, you swore because it was the mercy in eternity: you had all the time in the world and for Yoongi you would have waited centuries.
“Please forgive her. She didn’t know what she was doing…” Demeter murmurs, shedding the blood of innocent animals on an altar built for the God of Thunder. You scoff.
She of the Grain, the loving, worrying mother you once knew is now your prison’s guard, always keeping an eye on you and praying for your impure soul. Like you were somebody who should be saved from doom.
However, you wanted nothing more than those black cells, the burn of iron on your touch and the screams echoing in your ears. The power you found and had there, in that damned place itself, might have intoxicated you but you wanted it back. You wanted the life you chose over the one that was assigned to you.
“I don’t need your prayers,” you snapped at your mother grabbing at your dark clothes you refused to change to the colour of rebirth. Yoongi had gotten these gilded robes only for you and called you Queen, called you love when the night black dress matching your souls fit perfectly on your curves. His touch burnt through the layers but you enjoyed its warmth, bathed in the flames itching closer as his cool lips touched your throat.
“Zeus won’t forgive this disobedience if you don’t beg for it,” your mother warns you harshly, teeth gritting and you launch yourself onto the small altar of the room shoving its decorations away.
“I don’t care,” you cried frustrated, fingers crashing a rose in your fist until nothing but damaged petals paint your skin red. Lighting strikes outside, flashing angry white over your skin, shaking the walls, signalling that Zeus was indeed listening. “What’s the worst he could do? Kill me? Death sounds a lot better than this prison. Or will he exile me? Then why did he bring me back in the first place? Don’t you see, ma? I don’t belong here.”
Ever since you were a little child, growing up among gods and goddesses of harvest and prosperity, you knew you were different. You were the error in the perfect system, the mistake of an unwavering structure, the flap of the butterfly’s wing that could cause a hurricane on the other hemisphere of Earth. Oh, Chaos, the father of everything, would have been so proud of you. You craved finality of things instead of this boring infinity. You fancied destroying more than creating and that, that made you feel sick. Because what was wrong with you?
“Nothing,” Yoongi would have whispered into the seam of your lips. Loving and kind, sweet like death is for the tortured souls. “There's nothing wrong with you.”
And beside him, you really didn’t have to pretend nothing at all. You could be yourself, you could be angry, you could be at your worst and Yoongi loved then too. He loved your flaws, your mundane needs and naive wishes.
But Goddess of Harvest is relentless. Despite your resistance, she still thinks you aren’t a lost cause but you are, at least for her and the purposes she wants, you are beyond help. It isn’t until the cherry trees bloom that she has to realize that every action had a consequence. Just because she is a goddess and Zeus is the head of gods, they are not allowed to do anything without atonement. Nobody can go against the sacred rules of the world. One cannot just claim something that belongs to the Underworld because the darkness will reclaim it back. And Yoongi wanted you back.
It starts with blackouts, disgust of food and then you can’t make the flowers bloom anymore. Greenery dies under your footsteps and Demeter, she is horrified. She keeps you hidden in your room fearing the havoc your downfall might bring but this act angers the people even more. The farmers think their corns lose their value because you aren’t there to relive them. They have no idea of your new powers of destruction, the way you suck life out of any living thing you touch. It should terrify you yet you only laugh because the humans whom your mother tried so hard to please now despise her and do not make more ritual offerings for her altar. She blames you and pleads to Zeus to do something, anything but they are both helpless. Ancient laws like this can't be played out.
It takes a while for them to understand that you aren’t from around here anymore, that they can’t keep you here, can't make you bring spring for them. Your heart and soul, they draw you back to the Underworld, to your king.
"The leaves are falling and the nature is dying," Demeter watches the colourful leaves swirling around in the wind and the grief in her voice is familiar. It's regret and surrender, the recognition that she lost.
"Don't worry, mother. I will come back when it's time. But I will come on my two feet and I will be welcomed like a queen and not a kidnapped daughter," you tell her standing up and this time, the doorknob doesn't resist. The door's wings part in front of you and you follow the darkest ray of sunshine to the edge of mortal world.
You greet the Styx like you greet a lover, lips touching the surface of the deadly water and murmuring confessions. However, before you could cross the river, hands from your dreams grab on your waist pulling you back. You fit perfectly onto the wide chest you lean against and gasp at the sensation of chapped lips pressed to the underside of your jaw. It takes your breath away, suffocating you in the best way possible.
“Little bird… you came back,” a raw sigh escapes Yoongi, its exhale fanning over your neck dressing you in goosebumps as you relish in the feeling of his arms caressing your middle keeping you close like he never wanted to let you go. Not ever again.
“I will always come back to you,” the promise slips your mouth like the light always finds its way in the darkest tunnels and the waves crash onto the rocky shore. It almost hurts how true these words are, how unalterable they are. It may have been the seeds of pomegranate, the taste of Underworld that overpowered the will of higher deities and brought you back. It might have been for the unwritten rules nobody could break yet you would have crawl your way back here anyway.
“Have you been searching for me?” you turn around in Yoongi's embrace to face him and the yearning so clear in his onyx eyes catches you off guard.
“I looked everywhere. I turned the world upside down. I wanted to break down the walls of Olympus to get to you but they didn’t let me. They kept you locked away from me,” he admits and your heart shares his misery.
“I'm here now,” you whisper like a secret and standing on your tiptoes you kiss the God of Dead on the mouth. It feels like the first gulp of water after thirst or the first inhale of fresh oxygen after drowning, it tastes sweet like spring and bitter like the blood that rushes in your veins. It’s everything you’ve missed and more so you let yourself get lost in him.
You may spend half the year up on the surface, watching as the first snowdrops peep out of the frozen ground and heat scorches through the fields on hot summer days. But you are back in the realm of darkness during wine harvest and when the temperature drops below zero. You take spring with you and give it to Yoongi as you make love. You breathe life in him and plant love into the scratches on his back that your nails leave. You bring new hopes and kiss him like it's a first, eager and hungry. With swollen and split lips you swear you can taste his devotion on your tongue.
“I missed you,” he groans into the juncture of your throat every single time and draws colourful flowers all over your body with his mouth, tongue lapping over the bruises and marks you wear proudly as accessories adorning the canvas of your figure. And you will remember it, his whispered words, how it felt murmured into your skin, the pleasure and pain, all of it when eventually you will have to leave again. So that you will never forget.
And after six lunar months spent missing him, when you come back and he traces a finger on your naked waist as you lie naked on his bed, your bed, in his arms, you finally, finally feel at home.

On the links between Toffee and Eclipsa
I have a bit of a theory on what is going on between Toffee and Eclipsa, and would love to hear what others think - if they know of anything in canon that goes against it.
The Septarians (like Toffee and Rasticore) seem to be the only confirmed “immortals” in the series. Both known Septarians are related to Eclipsa (in Rasticore’s case, via Meteora) in some way, and yet Eclipsa was quite happy to give Moon the “darkest spell”, knowing that she was going to use it against one of them. I can think a few possibilities:
A) Eclipsa is the type of person who is willing to sacrifice an ally in order to secure her freedom. I think this is the least likely option personally, since the series seems to be pushing for a morally ambiguous tone for Eclipsa rather than outright villainy.
B) The “darkest spell” is not actually lethal; a few people have suggested that the spell simply transports the victim into the wand.
If B is true, then a few things could also be true.
We know, for example, that the wand is directly linked to the Realm of Magic, given the fact that the whispering spell allows Toffee to speak to Ludo directly through the wand’s crystal. Could a victim of the “darkest spell” also corrupt magic? In a similar way to how Star went and brought Toffee’s finger out of the wand, could Eclipsa’s plan have been to overpower young Queen Moon and to bring Toffee back after his “sacrifice” allowed her to break free from Rhombulus’ crystal?
Unless things like destiny and prophecy are gonna start playing a larger role (which may very well be the case given the emphasis placed on the cards suits and the imagery in St Olga’s), there’s no way Eclipsa could have predicted the exact circumstances that would lead to Moon going to her for help (and then actually accepting her help), so I think it’s likely that this wasn’t her original original plan. Indeed she doesn’t seem phased at all that this plan was set back a few decades due to Moon changing her aim, so I doubt she didn’t have a backup plan.
If Toffee’s actions are anything to go by, I think Eclipsa’s original plan may have been something like this:
- Find a particularly vulnerable wand-user (perhaps someone who has lost her mother at a young age, or who is living unguarded in a different dimension with some weakness you can exploit).
- Get them to say the whispering spell, giving an ally access to the Realm of Magic.
- Cause a magical fritz, which weakens Rhombulus’ crystals to the point where they break and you are freed - it is suggested in Crystal Clear that this was beginning to happen when Rhombulus comments that his crystals are now only as hard as rock candy.
- Profit???
Perhaps Eclipsa is even able to use the corrupted magic, given the fact that she’s the only royal to have experimented with such things?
Now, compared to what actually happened, the bare bones of the plan are pretty fair in moral terms - no-one is in harm’s way at least.
I have to wonder though exactly how closely Toffee followed the script? After all, if he and Ludo had just stayed out of Star’s way he probably would have succeeded, and yet he felt the need to push Ludo towards stealing Star’s knowledge, then the spell book, and finally the castle itself. Was killing one of Eclipsa’s great-great-great-(etc)-grandchildren part of her plan? What about then stranding an innocent princess in the Realm of Magic, drowning her in corrupted magic, and allowing her mother (the daughter of the previously murdered grandchild...) to think that she was dead? If we take what Eclipsa says at face value, then she lost her mother at a young age and also had to leave her own daughter(s) behind when they were young, is she really the type of person who would be willing to force that upon another family member for seemingly no reason?
I personally think that was all on Toffee. I think he raised a rebellion against his fellow monsters when it seemed like the “Monster King” (the guy we see in Moon the Undaunted) was getting too chummy with Queen Comet, Moon’s mother. He killed Comet and was preparing to take the castle for revenge’s sake. In the flashback the “Monster King” seems absolutely horrified about what happened to Comet, as well as the idea of Moon facing Toffee, so I think it’s a safe bet that Comet was actually pretty sympathetic to the monsters’ plight - she was about to sign a peace treaty after all... To be fair we don’t know exactly how balanced the treaty would have been, but it almost certainly would have been better than Moon “[hunting] down the remains of the monster army and [scattering] them without country or leadership”.
When Moon demonstrates that actually the Septarians aren’t invulnerable to Mewman magic it loses him his army, his position of power and respect, and his own sense of personal safety all in one fell swoop; as Marco says “the easiest way to depose a ruler is to destroy his credibility”. Everything beyond that point technically fits into Eclipsa’s plan (if we assume of course that this is her plan), but is motivated by a desire for revenge against Moon and Mewmans as a whole rather than loyalty towards Eclipsa.
He deliberately targets Moon’s daughter. In Fortune Cookies he learns that she is naturally powerful but that kindness is her weakness. This is something he takes advantage of in Storm the Castle. We also see him studying the wand in the background during Mewnipendence Day, so it’s likely that he knew a great deal about the way the wand works. During the same episode, we see him significantly more upset about the “Great Monster Massacre” than anyone else; a few people have suggested that he may have been directly involved in and affected by the massacre, due to his immortality. We then see him mistreating a fellow monster, Buff Frog, to further his own cause. At this point it is clear that his motivations are deeply personal, and that he is not above harming other monsters to get what he wants. This is made even more clear in the season 1 finale where his friendly facade towards Ludo and his minions is immediatelly dropped as soon as he has what he wants.
He calls Ludo to the cleaved half of the wand by taking advantage of his weakness - namely his obsession with Star and the wand. As previously mentioned, instead of laying low and corrupting magic to the point where Eclipsa could break free, he encourages Ludo to find a way to access Eclipsa’s magic, first by trying to kidnap Star, and then by taking the book. This then allows him to take physical control over Ludo’s body; however the only time he uses this ability is to harm, tease and mentally torture Moon and her allies:
- In The Hard Way he teases Glossaryck that he’ll never get Ludo on his side.
- In Starcrushed he pretty much attempts to kill Moon and the High Commission, succeeding in killing Lekmet. He then teases Moon that he is coming after Star next.
- In Book Be Gone he teases Glossaryck as he is “dying”
- Finally in Toffee he uses Star as a hostage to get his finger back from Moon
He also influences Ludo to take over the Butterfly castle while everyone but Ludo and Star are incapable of using magic. He uses his influence over Ludo to mistreat the Mewman population - most notably Ms. Bucket and the Mewni Youth Choir - and keep Star alive as a bargaining chip.
After he regains his body, he simply pushes Moon into the ground, trapping her next to the broken remains of half of the wand. A lot of people thought it was anti-climatic that he just lets her go after all of that, but when you look at it from the view of “he wanted revenge against Moon” it makes a lot more sense:
Toffee has literally taken everything from Moon.
- He killed her mother
- He “killed” her daughter
- Her husband is nowhere to be found
- He has destroyed Glossaryck, the Book, the Magic High Commission and half of the wand
- He has corrupted magic to the point where Moon couldn’t use the “darkest spell” to beat him, even with the other half of the wand
- He has broken Moon to the point where she is willing to actually use dark magic, regardless of the consequences
- He has thrown her kingdom into chaos
- He has trapped her in a pit in the destroyed remains of one of her castle towers, right next to a reminder of the fact that her daughter is gone and she is powerless - the broken wand
- She now has to live with this knowledge while the person responsible for it all simply walks away
I found this scene (and the one afterwards where Moon tries to fix the wand) really powerful, just for the level of utter hopelessness that permeated it all; it was a really bold move for a show in general, not to mention a kids’ cartoon. It’s pretty telling that Toffee would have won 100% without the intervention of Glossaryck, who manipulates Ludo into “killing” him so he and his little toasted pudding ball can be in the right place for Star to bring magic back. Needless to say, Glossy is the real MVP.
Honestly, I think the show is setting Toffee up to be the only truly evil character; even if he originally had noble intentions, they were tainted and he ended up so blinded by revenge that he trampled on monsters and mewmans alike. Only time will tell how Eclipsa will react to Toffee’s actions - what will she think of the deaths of Comet and Lekmet, for example? I also have to wonder exactly how much she is aware of what happened; certainly she doesn’t seem surprised by the fact that Glossaryck is acting the way he is, so she probably knows that the book has been destroyed (or mostly destroyed).
Edited for spelling lol

Dreaming Out Loud
Chapter 13: The Heart is a Lonely Hunter
Graham awoke with a start and shot up in bed, before swinging his legs over the side. He put his head in his hands and took in deep breaths of air.
"Is everything okay?" Regina asked, as she rolled over.
"Uh...yeah, just a weird dream," he muttered. She gave him a long gaze and then got out of bed.
"Henry will be up soon. You should go," she suggested. He nodded and got dressed, as Regina went into the bathroom to shower. The weird dream had not been a lie, but it was more like a nightmare of things that didn't make sense. He hated waking up here, but somehow he had ended up here again, despite initially telling Regina no. He quietly hurried out the door, but stopped dead in his tracks, as he spotted a wolf in his path, staring at him intently. It seemed to look through him and then ran off, leaving Graham feeling oddly stunned with memories of the nightmare searing his memory.
Oz
Approximately 3 Years Before the Dark Curse
As Zelena sat upon the bicycle with Hades, she studied him for a moment.
"Am I that interesting, my dear?" he teased. She smirked.
"I'm just wondering why you're here romancing me. Aren't you married?" she inquired. He smirked.
"If you want to get technical," he responded.
"And your Queen doesn't mind that you're here, romancing another?" she challenged.
"She prefers it, I assure you. She doesn't exactly return my...affections. She never has," he confessed.
"If you don't love her and she doesn't love you, then why keep her around?" she questioned.
"There was a time, centuries ago, when I was quite infatuated with Persephone. And in my more volatile youth, I didn't take no for an answer. Persephone was fairest of all and so I made her my Queen. She was mine...then she betrayed me," he explained.
"She cheated on you?" Zelena asked. He nodded.
"With a mortal of all disgraces. And that wasn't the worst part. She gave birth to his halfbreed spawn and her meddlesome mother put a protection spell over the child, preventing me from laying a hand on the little wretch," he explained.
"How dreadful," she lamented.
"That's why I employed my loyal nephew to find the child. When she was born, Demeter took her and hid her away. Unfortunately, he has failed to find her and it's been over twenty-five years," he continued.
"And the only way to truly make your beloved Persephone pay for her betrayal is to destroy her child," Zelena deduced. He smirked.
"I do love the way your devious mind works. You were truly meant for me, my love," he cooed.
"I do not play second string to anyone, especially not some fairest goddess," she refuted.
"Persephone may be the fairest of all, but she lacks your wickedness," he purred and she giggled, as something he said struck her.
"Persephone is called the fairest of all, yes?" she asked.
"Yes...a term coined by her sanctimonious mother," he replied.
"Why?" he asked, noticing the pensiveness on her face. She smirked.
"It's just not the first time I've heard such a term. There is a mortal princess whom the same moniker has been coined for her. My sister seeks to destroy her for getting her true love killed. Perhaps such a moniker is not a coincidence," Zelena suggested.
"But Persephone's daughter would be half immortal…" he said, as he trailed off for a moment.
"Unless…" he started to say.
"Unless?" she questioned.
"Can you show me this princess?" he asked. She looked at him for a moment and then nodded.
"I have a way to see the Enchanted Forest from my palace," she confirmed. He smirked evilly.
"Take me there. We may still make chaos together yet," he said gleefully.
For the most part, Graham had been able to carry on his day as normal. He didn't really want to face Emma, having woke up again in Regina's bed, so he texted her, offering to take early patrol. The strange dreams played through his head though like a movie.
There was a forest and he was there, looking down at Mary Margaret. Except it wasn't Mary Margaret exactly. This woman looked exactly like her, but with long raven tresses and the most innocent face he had ever seen. He was horrified, for in his dreams, he was going to end her life. She forgave him and was waiting to die. But he couldn't do it and let her get away.
That's when he saw the wolf again, standing in the middle of the road on the back roads of town. He slammed on the breaks and stared into the wolf's eyes, as more flashes assaulted him. This time he wasn't asleep though, so how they could have been dreams, he had no idea. But they were becoming more clear and these new visions were frightening.
He saw himself enslaved to Regina, his glowing heart in her hand. Despite that, he defied her and helped the Prince escape his execution. Therefore, Snow White was awakened with true love's kiss and Regina lost.
But she wasn't about to accept her defeat and cast the Dark Curse. And this place they had been living in for the last twenty-eight years was that curse.
His eyes widened, as it all came rushing back to him like a stream of images in his head.
He remembered everything...because things were changing in Storybrooke and all because of the Savior. Snow and Charming's daughter...Emma.
"Emma…" he uttered, as he did a sharp u-turn and sped back toward the station.
After leaving the library, they stopped into Granny's for something hot to drink to take with them on their walk. They still drew a lot of attention when they entered the diner together, her hand hooked on his elbow. There were whispers, but Mary found she was able to pay them less mind than before. They could talk all they wanted, because what she and David had was between them.
"Well...if it isn't Storybrooke's newest item," Granny mused, making Mary blush.
"What'll it be?" she asked.
"Two hot cocoas with cinnamon," David replied. The elderly woman smiled at them.
"Coming right up," she said, giving them a cheeky look, as she went to make their drinks.
"You'd think they'd have better things to do than stare at us," she muttered.
"People love gossip," he agreed. It was true in this land it seemed, just as it had been in their land. The other royals and nobles of the court loved to gossip, especially about them. A marriage based on true love in royalty was an anomaly. He and Snow had begun a trend though. They were one of the first royal marriages in many years that was not arranged and based solely on true love. Thomas and Ella followed their example, though King Christopher was a bit more open to this kind of thing. Abigail and Frederick had been next, though Midas was reluctant. Frederick wasn't a royal, but being that he was a Knight, the King allowed it, though Charming doubted Abigail would have let her father stop her.
While Thomas' kingdom had accepted a former peasant as their Queen, Charming knew that Snow's much more conservative court, still loyal to the long dead Leopold, might have put up much fuss if they had known he was not the real James.
He knew Snow would never allow them to tell her who she could or could not marry, but he was well aware of the uproar it might cause if it were to become public that he was raised as a poor shepherd.
It seemed not much had changed in that respect. They were still under scrutiny, though they had never let it bother them. They had always been too absorbed in their powerful, passionate love to let the opinions of others factor into their lives. And he was determined to keep that trend, as he leaned down and kissed her, probably with a little more heat than was appropriate in public.
She gazed up at him in surprise, as their lips parted.
"What was that for?" she asked. He smiled.
"We might as well give them something to stare at," he replied. She bit her bottom lip, a clear tell that she was turned on and leaned her head against his arm, just as Granny returned with their finished drinks.
"Thanks Granny," he said, as he paid her. She smiled at the pair. There was definitely something about them. Together, hot cocoas in hand, they joined their free hands and left the diner for their walk. Wilby had waited outside and now trotted alongside them.
Regina unlocked the box and picked up the glowing heart inside. She had been keeping it locked in her office, but stopped there to get it, before coming to her vault. She was too paranoid to leave it unattended any longer, especially after her jarring run-in with a defiant Dr. Hopper.
She decided to come survey what little magic she had left, for her curse was unraveling faster than she could ever have imagined. She had to keep Graham close. She had a very big problem in Emma Swan. Add to that, those two idiots were so ridiculously in love, it made her sick. She had heard all the gossip how David Nolan was shacking up with the pretty, shy schoolteacher and literally sweeping her off her feet.
And if that wasn't irritating enough, there was Gold, who was far too cocky with his little bookworm around. Belle was the leverage she had been keeping for a rainy day and with that gone, it gave him far more control than she was comfortable with.
She needed a triple strike against all of them. If she was lucky, sending Damon after the two idiots again would take care of that problem. In addition, as soon as she knew all there was to know about Emma Swan, she'd be able to proceed with destroying her. That just left the bookworm and a devious smile spread across her face, as she opened her potions cabinet.
"You may have prevented me from putting David and Kathryn in a fake marriage by manipulating the false memories I gave her, so I would say turn about is fair play," she hissed, as she picked up a matchbook from the Rabbit Hole and picked up a blue vial of potion. She put a couple drops on the matchbook and smirked gleefully.
"Let's see how smug you are when your precious Belle becomes a trashy barfly," she mused. She pocketed the matchbook. Of course, first she would need someone extra to plant doubt of her identity in Belle, before she planted the false memories. And that would require a visit to a certain flower shop owner. Yes, she was feeling very good and so she picked up Graham's heart and then dialed his number.
"Not now Regina," he answered.
"Excuse me, is that any way to talk to your Mayor?" she asked.
"I'm busy," he said.
"And I don't care. Meet me at my house," she ordered.
"No...I have much more important things to do," he replied, as he hung up on her. Regina's mouth dropped open in disbelief. He had never so blatantly refused her. Even with his heart in her hand, he was resisting. And the last time he had refused her so utterly had been...back in the Enchanted Forest. When he had his memories. If he was remembering, he could ruin everything in one fell swoop.
But how was he remembering? It wasn't possible...was it? She pursed her lips, her rage barely contained. All the recent problems with her curse could be traced back to one Emma Swan. She hoped to hell that Damon came through with that information. She needed to know why one woman was unraveling everything she had worked for. But if Graham was remembering, then he now a very big threat. A threat that had to be neutralized. She hurried out of her vault and to her car. She had to get to the station.
Emma jumped in surprise, as Graham ran in, practically crashing through the door at the station.
"Where's the fire?" she asked, as she took in his appearance. His eyes were wide with wonder, as he gazed upon her. He was disheveled and looked like he hadn't slept much in days.
"Emma…" he uttered.
"Yeah...what's going on with you?" she asked.
"Emma…" he repeated and she raised an eyebrow.
"Yes...I think we've established that I'm Emma. Me Emma. You Graham," she teased, with a smirk. But he seemed too distracted to be amused by her joke.
"I remember…" he stated.
"What?" she asked.
"I remember...and this is going to sound nuts...but you're the Savior," he replied. Her eyebrows were in her hair at that point, but it was her turn to shock him.
"Yeah...daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. The Savior, destined to break the curse," she stated, in a matter of fact tone. His eyes got bigger, if that was possible.
"You...you know?!" he exclaimed. She smirked.
"Long story...but yeah I've known since I was old enough to understand. You really remember?" she asked, hope in her voice.
"Everything...I was the Huntsman. I...I tried to kill Snow White," he said regrettably.
"My Mom tells it a bit differently. She says you made a different choice and defied the Queen, knowing very well that you were probably forfeiting your own life," Emma replied, enjoying his surprise even more, as he closed the distance between them.
"Regina...she has my heart," he uttered.
"I know...I've been trying to figure out a way to get it back. I think she's keeping it close to her," she replied.
"I...I can't believe you know…" he stammered.
"I'll tell you how, but first I think we need to get this," she replied, as she touched the spot on the center of his chest. Their eyes locked and they stared at each other for several moments.
"Regina...I never…" he started to say, but she stopped him.
"She forced you...I know that now," she replied. And with that, he closed the remaining distance and pressed his lips to hers.
Unbeknownst to them, Regina glowered at the picture of them from outside the window of the station. She couldn't hear what they were saying, but their body language spoke volumes. And then when their lips met, the rage burning inside her became too overwhelming for her to ignore. This woman...this interloper was ruining everything and she had to teach her what happened when you crossed her. She extracted the glowing heart from her pocket and thought about his rejection. If he was remembering, he was a very big threat, but his rejection is what stung the most; that he would choose this woman over her. He had defied her for the final time and he had to pay. With no more hesitation, she squeezed his heart and crushed in into diamond dust that floated away in the wind, before stalking away. The gloves were off and she was declaring war on her enemies. When she finished, nothing but dust would remain of them all if she had her way.
Their lips parted and they shared a smile.
"I guess we have a lot to talk about," Emma mentioned. He smiled. They did, but he wasn't too interesting in talking at the moment. He leaned in, about to kiss her again, when he paused.
"What's wrong?" Emma asked. The pain was sharp and excruciating. Instinctively, he knew what was happening and he should have known all along that a happy ending was not something in the cards for him. It nearly broke him, but he knew she'd go on without him. She was destined to break the curse and defeat Regina. She would avenge him. So he said the only parting words he could.
"I love you," he uttered and then collapsed to the floor. Emma cried out and crashed to her knees beside him. She shook him violently, but she knew what had happened.
"No...no...no...no…" she cried repeatedly, as she searched for a pulse. But he wasn't breathing and would never again, for she knew his heart was now dust. The Queen had done this...she had killed him. Emma sobbed against his chest, her fists clenching his shirt. Her eyes glistened with fury, as her shoulders racked with sobs and her expression was pure rage...rage for the woman that had caused all of this.
She had terrorized her parents, cursed them, forced them to give her up, forced her to grow up without them, at least when she was awake. She had her son and would do anything to keep him away. She had sent a monster after her parents and would do so again. She had killed a man she was falling in love with; the first man she had let close to her since Henry's father. The gloves were off and she was declaring war on the Queen. And when she finished, Regina would finally lose, once and for all.
She sniffed and tried to wipe her eyes in an attempt to gather herself. But it was no use. She needed the only two people that could possibly comfort her in any way right now. She picked up her phone with shaky hands and dialed her mother.
Mary Margaret leaned her head against his arm, as they walked through the woods and over the Toll bridge. Wilby was ahead of them, but not too far, quite enamored by all the wilderness and wildlife. They stopped in a clearing and were stunned by the sight of a mother deer and its baby. The doe looked at them curiously for a moment and then relaxed when she decided they weren't a threat. He gazed at her, loving the awe on her beautiful face.
"Such a beautiful sight…" Mary uttered.
"Yeah…" he agreed, though he was referring to a different sight of beauty.
"You are not even looking at the deer," she teased, as she nudged him in the ribs.
"Sorry...they are beautiful, but definitely the second most beautiful thing I've seen today," he replied. She looked at him, almost in disbelief, as he leaned down and pressed his lips to hers. As their lips parted, Mary gazed up at him and the love in his eyes took her breath away.
"I keep pinching myself to make sure you're real," she mentioned. He smiled.
"Maybe I should pinch you," he teased and she gasped in surprise, as he pinched her rear. He chuckled at the look on her face.
"David…" she said, as she blushed.
"What? You can pinch me too if you want...in fact, I'm sure I'd enjoy that," he replied, as he wriggled his eyebrows at her playfully.
"Maybe I will…" she challenged.
"By all means, Ms. Blanchard," he challenged back, as their lips met passionately.
"Mmm...there is so much more I want to do than pinching right now," she purred. He smirked, as she took his hand and started leading him back over the bridge.
"Come on Wilby…" he called, as he slipped his arm around her waist and she smiled up at him, her eyes shining with love. As they reached town again, they decided to pick up take out from Granny's, but that's when Mary's phone rang.
"Hi Emma," she answered. But a stifled sob made her frown.
"Mary?" she asked.
"Emma...what's wrong. You're crying," she said in alarm.
"Um...it's Graham. He's dead," she sobbed.
"What?" she asked in disbelief, as her knees almost buckled. Luckily, David was there to hold her up.
"Where are you?" she choked out.
"The station. The ambulance is on its way...but it's useless. He's gone…" she said.
"We'll be right there," Mary said, as she hung up and looked up at David with a tearful gaze.
"Is Emma hurt?" he asked, as fear seized his heart. He had to try and remember that to everyone else, Emma was just his friend. But if his baby girl was hurt...he didn't know if would be able to keep up that charade.
"It's Graham...he's dead," she cried, as he took her in his arms and held her, as she cried.
"Emma needs us…" she sobbed. He nodded and they changed their direction toward the station. He huddled Mary close to him and knew her tears were still falling, as they hurried to the station. Emma needed them.
By the time David and Mary arrived at the station, Emma had already called the hospital to tell them she needed the coroner, but they hadn't arrived yet. So David and Mary found her knelt beside Graham's body and it was a heartbreaking sight.
"Emma…" David said, as they knelt down on either side of her. Mary gently pulled her into a hug and David rubbed her back.
"What happened?" Mary asked. Emma sniffed and looked at her father over Mary's shoulder. He knew what had happened, but she couldn't exactly tell Mary that the Evil Queen had crushed his heart.
"He...just suddenly collapsed," Emma said. It wasn't untrue, as it had happened in a blink of an eye.
"I'm so sorry," Mary said, choking back a sob. Emma held onto her tightly and then pulled back, as the paramedics arrived. She quickly started wiping her tears away. Mary and David sat with her, while Graham's body was loaded into the Coroner's van.
"I know there's nothing we can say to make this better, but why don't we go home?" Mary suggested. Emma nodded.
"I'll run to the diner and be right behind you. I know grilled cheese and hot cocoa won't make it better, but it will at least be something warm in your stomach," he said. Emma managed a nod, as he saw them off toward Mary's apartment, while he headed for the diner. He took out the phone in his pocket and found a text from Emma. It read words that Emma couldn't tell him aloud.
Graham remembered everything. He told me and then he died.
That stunned him, but if he had been remembering, then it meant it worried Regina enough to eliminate him.
He went to his contacts and picked the number he wanted from the names Emma had programmed into the phone for him. He pressed the green button and then put it to his ear.
"Hello," Jefferson answered.
"Graham's dead," he said bluntly. He heard Jefferson blow out of low whistle.
"Let me guess...she finally did it, didn't she? She crushed his heart," Jefferson said.
"I think so. Emma said he just collapsed and was gone, just like that," David replied angrily.
"She's getting scared," Jefferson said.
"Emma told me he remembered. She must have thought he was enough of a threat to kill him," David replied.
"Yeah, because a healthy man his age just doesn't keel over. Even the hapless people in this town might ask questions," he mentioned.
"Too bad they'd never believe the truth," he said with a sigh.
"We need to be careful. This is just her first strike, you know. She's probably busy plotting away right now," Jefferson warned.
"I know...I need to get back to Mary and Emma. Can you call Gold? He should know," David replied.
"Sure...be careful out there," Jefferson warned.
"You too," he said, as he hung up and went into Granny's.
Regina crinkled her nose, as she stepped into Damon Tromera's club. She hated this place; this eyesore in her town. Sleazy was being too nice when used to describe this establishment. The carpet in the whole place was blood red and tacky as hell, but then Damon didn't remember exactly why he had such a penchant for red. It was late and there were only a few patrons, drinking and they paid her no mind, for the scantily clad girl on stage held their attention. She barely looked legal and under normal circumstances, not even she would let this kind of thing go on under her nose. But Damon was her means to making her stepdaughter truly pay.
"Madam Mayor...welcome. Can I interest you in a drink?" Damon asked, without taking his eyes away from the girl on stage. It was no wonder why he had hired this one. Long raven curls, green eyes, red lips and fair skin.
"This isn't a social call. I'm here, because you have yet to hold up your end of our deal," Regina said. He smirked and put his drink down, before retrieving a file from underneath the bar.
"Oh, I think this will satisfy you," he said, as he handed it to her. She eagerly opened the folder and started reading. And what she took in made her blood run cold, but suddenly made frightening sense.
"This is legitimate?" she asked. He nodded.
"Seems she was abandoned on the side of the road as an infant, not far from here. Quite a coincidence," he replied. Oh, but the Queen knew it was no coincidence. It all made perfect sense now. Emma Swan wasn't just an ordinary orphan. She was the Savior...daughter of her enemies. Her protectiveness of those two idiots was no longer puzzling. She had found her parents and was chipping away at her perfect revenge, day by day.
"Now that you have that, I expect you to return the favor," Damon said.
"Mary Margaret and her...coma patient have been frequenting walks in the woods lately. Getting the drop on them shouldn't be that hard, but that's up to you," Regina replied. He smirked.
"That's excellent news," he said. But she ignored him and took the file with her, as she left quickly. Her curse was in more danger of unraveling than she originally thought...
